National Awards for the
Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, 2011
What is
common for Beethovan, Hellen Keller, Stephen Hawking, President Roosevelt, and
Sudha Chandran?
Most
readers know. All these are physically challenged persons. Beethovan was deaf
but went on to become the most famous composer of music during his times and remains
so in our hearts even today.
Helen
Keller was herself blind, deaf and mute – but devoted her life for persons with
disabilities.
Stephen
Hawking is a physicist cum mathematician who has Lou Gehrigs Disease and lives
on a wheelchair. He needs a computer to speak. But, he has written some of the
most fantastic science works.
President
Roosevelt had legs paralyzed by Polio at age 39 – but became Governor of New
York and later US President for a record four times.
What
can you do with an amputated leg? You can dance
beautifully – by putting on a specially made Jaipur Foot. That is the
brave Sudha Chandran from India.
These
people have proved that it is not always that man proposes and God disposes. In
respect of the courageous - God proposes but man disposes in an altogether,
unpredictable direction – with glory crowning their heads.
We
can see that God is really quite happy with their achievements. God encourages
them and eggs them to do more, achieve more – and show that God is on the side
of the brave and the hard working – not on the side of the lazy and the frightened.
It
is in this context that one has to view the annual awards given to the
disadvantaged and disabled persons on 3rd, December,2011, at the
function organized by the Indian Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment
(Disability Division). There are obviously many others who may be just as
deserving – but have not come to public notice. I salute all these brave
persons – and draw inspiration from them
– for the rest of my life.
